At our recent Christmas concert, we were thrilled to showcase the talent of our new orchestra group, the “Classy-Pops.” Under the direction of teacher Domitille, this ensemble of 11 young musicians delivered a captivating performance that left the audience in awe.
The Classy-Pops are not music-beginners; they consist of students who have completed a three-year music theory and history program with Domitille or are currently in their third year. This level of experience allows them to tackle challenging pieces with confidence and skill. Each term, the group learns two pieces: one classical and one pop. Since their formation in September, they have been practicing Pachelbel’s “Canon” and Adele’s “Skyfall.”
What made this group truly unique was their approach to learning. For one of the pieces, students played an instrument they were already familiar with. However, for the other piece, they had to switch to an instrument they had never played before. This “challenge accepted” mentality led to a remarkable success at the concert, showcasing their versatility and dedication.
The Classy-Pops boast a diverse array of musicians, including violinists, cellists, pianists, drummers, xylophone and glockenspiel players, and flutists. Many of these students played instruments they had never touched before, and the result was nothing short of beautiful.
Looking ahead, the orchestra is excited to start new pieces in January, including Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” (yes, all four!) and Bruno Mars’ “Talking to the Moon.” They will be ready to impress again at our next concert on June 7th!
