When Are Exams Appropriate?

Exams can be a wonderful option for students who:

• Have strong focus and discipline
• Enjoy structured academic challenges
• Practice consistently every week
• Wish to obtain internationally recognized qualifications
• Thrive in goal-oriented environments

After a few months of lessons, teachers may recommend exams for students who show strong potential and an academic mindset.

Before registering for any exam:

• Teachers must speak with parents
• Commitment, expectations, and costs are clearly discussed
• We ensure the student is emotionally and practically ready

Please always speak with the FHK team first before planning an exam pathway.

Available Examination Boards

ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music)

For Classical Instruments

ABRSM is one of the world’s most established and respected music examination boards, particularly suited for classical training.

• Structured grades (Initial Grade to Grade 8)
• Focus on technique, scales, sight-reading, and aural skills
• Three prepared pieces from different musical styles
• Strong emphasis on musical interpretation and accuracy
• Written theory exams required from Grade 6 onward

ABRSM is ideal for students who:

• Enjoy classical repertoire
• Are methodical and academically inclined
• May later apply to conservatories or formal music studies

Trinity College London

For Classical & Contemporary / Pop Instruments

Trinity offers a flexible and modern approach to music exams.

• Wide repertoire choices (classical and contemporary)
• Technical work adapted to instrument and style
• Sight-reading or musical knowledge options
• Performance-focused format
• Emphasis on musical communication

Trinity works well for students who:

• Prefer a slightly more flexible exam structure
• Enjoy expressive performance
• Want classical or contemporary certification

Rockschool (RSL Awards)

For Pop, Rock & Contemporary Music

Rockschool is designed specifically for modern musicians.

• Pop, rock, funk, metal, and contemporary repertoire
• Backing tracks used in the exam
• Technique and stylistic understanding
• Improvisation and ear tests
• Performance certificates available as an alternative to graded exams

Rockschool is ideal for students who:

• Love modern music styles
• Play guitar, bass, drums, vocals, or keyboard in pop/rock genres
• Want an exam format aligned with today’s music industry

The Commitment Required

Preparing for an exam is very different from recreational learning.

It requires:

• Thorough weekly practice
• Technical discipline
• Long-term preparation (often several months)
• Parent support and organisation

Our FHK teachers are experienced and skilled at coaching students toward exams — but success depends on teamwork between student, teacher, and family.

We generally do not recommend taking exams every year.
Our priority remains balanced development, musical enjoyment, and participation in concerts.

Financial considerations

Students who will embark in an exam journey will need to consider the extra-necessary budget:

• Examination fees (between HKD1900 and HK8000 according to board and level)
• + Our optional (yet very useful/recommended) HKD1500 maestro package that includes:
  • 1 hour studio rental (piano) or accompaniment (violin, flute, guitar…)
  • 1 extra 45min masterclass with a different teacher for additional insights before recording
